This course is designed to teach the basics of keelboat sailing. No prior sailing experience is required. The class uses Capri 22 sailboats, which are ideal for learning to sail. The boats are responsive, stable, and easy to sail, while giving you a much better feel for the wind than larger boats. You will learn the sailing basics and get plenty of time on the water for your hands-on training. During this course, you will receive instruction in such basic skills as preparation of the boat, rigging, hoisting and setting sails, Rules of the Road, docking, anchoring, and mooring, as well as VHF Radio and outboard motor operation. Upon graduation, you will receive ASA certification and you will be ready to safely and confidently skipper boats in the 25 ft. range. Our weekday classes are held Monday through Wednesday, and weekend classes Friday through Sunday, each day runs 9 am – 4 pm. Fee includes a trial ASA membership and its benefits and discounts.

Our ASA-101 course is inclusive of certification, course materials, logbooks,
and ASA membership.
This course is designed to teach Basic Keelboat sailing over a 2-day period and is limited to 2 persons, which will allow you to get the needed individual instruction and hands-on time sailing on the water. Students may register individually, but there must be 2 students to run the class. Classes are typically scheduled for Saturday and Sunday and run each day from 9 am – 4 pm. Upon graduation, you will receive ASA certification and you will be ready to safely and confidently skipper boats in the 25 ft. range.
Course Fee $860 per person (plus shipping of course materials)
This course teaches the skills required to safely navigate keelboats in the 25 – 35 ft range in coastal inland waters. The course gives hands-on experience maneuvering boats in and out of docks, picking up moorings, anchoring, basic navigation, and an introduction to cruising. The 3-day course provides daily on the water instruction and returns back to the sailing school each afternoon. Prerequisite: ASA 101. (Arrangements can be made to test out of ASA 101, prior to the class, for sailors who already possess basic keelboat skills.)

ASA 103 rates include your textbook and certification.
This course is designed to give individuals the knowledge and skills needed to competently sail and handle boats 30 – 45 ft. This is an on-the-water class and you WILL BE staying on the boat. You will learn the skills of provisioning the boat, galley operations, boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, routine maintenance, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation & chart plotting, anchoring and docking. The course prepares you for chartering a bareboat or cruising your own boat.
ASA recommends a minimum of 80 on-the-water sailing hours before taking the ASA 104 class.
This course also qualifies the sailor for the International Proficiency Certificate (IPC). The IPC serves as proof of bareboat charter competency for Mediterranean chartering companies, many of whom require the proficiency information displayed in a different format than the ASA Log Book. This certificate is mandatory when chartering in most European / Mediterranean waters. Course prerequisites: ASA 101 and 103 (arrangements can be made for experienced sailors to test out of ASA 101 and 103)

This intense 5-day, 4-night class combines the Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103) and Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104) courses. The student will learn and practice the skills required for both ASA 103 and 104 while “cruising” for 5 days on the Chesapeake Bay. The class will meet at the BaySail facility for an introduction and proceed to provisioning the boat for the class. The class will be on the water and begin navigating and cruising to some of the most beautiful anchorages on the bay. You will learn first-hand galley operation, boat systems, engine operation, routine maintenance, sail trim, navigation & chart plotting, anchoring and docking as you plan your cruising experience. This course prepares you for chartering a bareboat or cruising your own boat. Student limit: 3 individuals or 2 couples. Prerequisite: ASA 101.
Combo Course rates include certification for ASA 103 and ASA 104. The textbooks are included for this course.
This course teaches navigational theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters. It is offered in both a classroom and a home study version. Both include course materials and certification. The classroom version is held at the BaySail campus over 4 days (2 alternating weekends). For the home study version, students are sent all the course materials and then arrange to come to the BaySail office for a full day to take the exam, which must be monitored by an instructor. The instructor will also be available before the test for a short review and question & answer period before the exam. Register for the Home Study option to receive your study materials and schedule your test date any time during the 2023 season.

Our practical hands-on instruction will show you how to safely and reliably dock a boat under different conditions. Safety requirements, maneuvering in and out of marina slips, along docks and much more will be covered. This course is held in one day. Maximum of four students enrolled. All taxes, fuel, boat and instructor are included in price.
Course fee $400 per person (plus shipping of course materials)
The ASA 101 challenge consists of a half-day evaluation on a Capri 22 with an instructor/evaluator. The ASA 103 or 101/103 challenge consists of a half-day evaluation on a 25 – 35 ft keelboat with an instructor/evaluator. Challenge classes are offered to students that have registered for a class that requires a prerequisite of 101 or 103 certification. All certification are given after successful completion of the registered class.
Certification Challenge Fee: $395 per person
The Certification Challenge Fee includes the boat, instructor and ASA 101 or 103 certification.

Private instruction is available in all facets of sailing either on your own boat or on one of ours. This includes refresher courses as well as confidence-building practice in docking or close quarters maneuvering. On a BaySail boat, the price is $210 for half day (3 hours) or $305 for a full day (7 hours) plus the price of the boat. Private Instruction conducted on your own boat is $275 for a half day or $450 for a full day plus expenses for travel. These prices do not include tax, course materials, certifications or transportation. We’ll build a program to meet your goals and objectives.
